The Mercantile Hotel & Bar, located in the heart of Dublin city at 28 Dame Street, has been a landmark for locals and tourists alike since 1835. This May it will re-open its doors to welcome guests into an extraordinary and fully revamped hotel.

New hotel features

With a heritage spanning 190 years, the past and present blend seamlessly throughout the new hotel with every room thoughtfully reimagined, preserving the building’s timeless charm while introducing modern comforts and state of the art technology. The new design is described as Georgian elegance meets contemporary Dublin and is full of character – drawing inspiration from 19th century commerce and exploration, to bring out a new fun and vibrant hotel personality that will appeal to all ages. New features include:

  • Restaurant with a menu curated by Stephen Gibson
  • Bar and Café28

Stephen Gibson is an established Head Chef with over 30 years of experience. He is most well-known for founding French restaurant Pichet, as well as having an integral role in Café en Seine, both run by the Mercantile Group. Stephen has worked abroad in France, London and Sydney. He will bring his renowned passion to the new menus on offer at The Mercantile Hotel.

The significant conservation and redevelopment of The Mercantile Hotel & Bar preserves its architectural heritage which can be seen in the refurbishment of the original façades, the restoration of the sash windows and removal of modern alterations to reveal the buildings’ true Georgian character.

New hospitality jobs

The reopening of the hotel will bring 80 new hospitality jobs in Dublin city centre. Positions include accommodation manager, chefs, food & beverage manager, and front office manager.

It has been five years since we closed the hotel for renovations, so we are very excited to be opening its doors in May. We have significantly increased the number of hotel bedrooms by 275%, in addition to adding a new rear extension and an additional floor, which will enhance our guest’s experience. The reopening of the hotel creates 80 jobs for the hospitality sector, resulting in a boost to the local economy.”
