Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, Winterval, is set to return to Ireland’s oldest city and the European City of Christmas – Waterford this winter, promising more magic, wonder, and festive cheer than ever before. Running from November 21st until December 23rd, Winterval has firmly established itself as Ireland’s premier Christmas festival, transforming the historic Viking city into a twinkling wonderland that draws visitors from across the country and beyond.
This year, Winterval weekends will be even more magical with the festival now running every Thursday to Sunday, giving visitors extra opportunities to soak up the festive fun and providing a welcome boost for local hotels and accommodation providers.
Santa’s Grotto is one of the shining highlights of Winterval, returning to Waterford’s historic underground vaults for 2025, where children can step into Santa’s enchanting Christmas kingdom. From the moment little visitors arrive, they are greeted by cheerful elves, who guide them through a twinkling wonderland filled with festive surprises, sparkling decorations, and the gentle scent of cinnamon and pine.
Inside the grotto, children can meet Santa himself, share their Christmas wishes, and pose for magical photos in a truly immersive festive setting. The experience also includes a special play area designed to delight all senses: soft, colourful toys, tactile activities, and interactive features ensure younger guests have endless fun while exploring Santa’s world.
Tickets for Santa’s Grotto are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.winterval.ie. Families are encouraged to book early, as tickets often sell out quickly, guaranteeing every child the chance to experience the joy, wonder, and magic of meeting Santa in this unforgettable setting.
This year in the European City of Christmas, Winterval invites families, friends, and visitors of all ages to step into a world of Christmas enchantment with its festive programme of events and attractions that blend cherished traditions. The heart of the city will once again come alive with sparkling lights and festive market stalls, where visitors can wander through the famous Winterval Christmas Market, nestled among the cobbled streets and medieval landmarks that make Waterford so unique. Local craftspeople, artisan food producers, and gift makers will offer the perfect opportunity to discover one-of-a-kind Christmas presents while supporting Irish businesses.
Local restaurants, cafes, and bars will join in the festivities, offering special Winterval-themed menus and cosy spots to relax and soak up the seasonal spirit. Waterford’s rich heritage and vibrant community ensure that Winterval remains not just a festival, but a true celebration of the city’s enduring warmth and hospitality.
Festival Director Trevor Darmody said, “As Winterval celebrates its 13th year, we are thrilled to unveil the first announcements for Winterval 2025—an event that has firmly established itself as Ireland’s most beloved Christmas festival. With extended weekends and an even wider array of magical experiences, we look forward to welcoming families to explore the festive attractions, enjoy the illuminations, and create lasting memories in the heart of Waterford—a city like no other. This festival continues to grow in reputation, proudly upholding its accolade as a European City of Christmas.
