Waterford Treasures Museums is inviting visitors of all ages to discover centuries of stories, objects and traditions through a special programme of events taking place during National Heritage Week 2026.
From exclusive curator-led tours and behind-the-scenes access to fascinating collections to family workshops and guided walks through the city’s ancient walls, this year’s programme offers a unique opportunity to explore Waterford’s rich and varied heritage.
The celebrations begin on Monday, August 17, with a free lunchtime tour of the Bishop’s Palace led by curator Rosemary Ryan. Taking place at 1.15 pm, the special highlights tour will showcase some of the treasures of the collection while also providing an insight into the important work involved in preserving and conserving museum artefacts.
On Tuesday, August 18 at 6 pm, visitors will have a rare opportunity to venture behind the scenes with curator Donnchadh Ó Ceallacháin for “Out of Storage – Maritime Objects from our Collection”. As Waterford Treasures partners with the Port of Waterford to create a permanent maritime gallery, this special event will shine a spotlight on remarkable objects that tell the story of Waterford’s long history as a port city. Participants will enjoy close-up access to artefacts not normally on public display while learning about their use, craftsmanship and fascinating histories.
Families are especially catered for on Sunday, August 23, when young historians and their grown-ups are invited to “Life in Viking Waterford”, an interactive family workshop taking place at 11.30am. Children will be able to step into the world of the Vikings through costumes, arts and crafts activities and hands-on experiences with replica objects in a fun and engaging event designed to inspire curiosity about the past. Admission is €5 per person.
Later that afternoon, at 2.30 pm, visitors can discover the remarkable story of Waterford’s medieval defences during “A Waterford Wall Walk”. Led by curators Clíona Purcell and Donnchadh Ó Ceallacháin, this free guided walk will explore the walls and towers that protected the city for centuries and reveal how these ancient structures remain hidden in plain sight around modern Waterford. The moderate walking route takes approximately two hours.
Waterford Treasures is also planning a special Georgian-themed event with costume historian Melissa Shiels. The event will take place in the Bishop’s Palace and will offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into Georgian fashion and society. Admission will be €5 per person, with further details to be announced.
