Table Service is a contact-free service designed to assist with social distancing, provide an alternative to physical menus and minimising contact between customers and staff

Launching in Ireland today, Deliveroo aims to provide table service to hundreds of restaurants in the coming weeks to help restaurants reopen safely

Restaurant partners who activate Table Service will benefit from 0% commission on dine-in orders placed through the Deliveroo app

Wednesday 15 July, Ireland: Deliveroo, the leading food-delivery company, has today launched ‘Table Service’, a new feature so that customers can dine-in safely in restaurants, and at the same time, help to boost the sector’s recovery. The announcement follows Fáilte Ireland guidance, which encourages restaurants to use contactless ordering in their restaurants through apps.

The service will enable customers to browse the menu, order, and pay at a restaurant via the Deliveroo app without coming into contact with restaurant staff, making it easier for both customers to dine in restaurants while maintaining social distancing and for restaurant staff to work safely.

With the announcement, Deliveroo becomes the first major platform in Ireland to introduce the feature, which is available to restaurants, pubs, and cafes across Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway. Over time, the company aims to make this available to restaurants in other parts of the country.

Restaurants who use Table Service will benefit from 0% commission on dine-in orders placed through the Deliveroo app. Deliveroo has done this to make adoption as widespread as possible, to support as many restaurants as possible and to give as many consumers as possible confidence about returning to restaurants to dine in. This also enables restaurants to increase sales without paying commission.

For restaurants that adopt Table Service and also offer Pick Up, Deliveroo is also offering the Pickup service at 0% commission for a 3-month period. This initiative follows a submission from Deliveroo and 57 independent Irish restaurants, calling for urgent Government support for the sector.

The launch of Table Service represents a significant evolution of the Deliveroo platform. Initially offering only delivery via its riders, in June 2018 Deliveroo launched Marketplace+, enabling restaurants to fulfil orders using their own riders. In March 2020 the company launched ‘Pickup’, a new click and collect service. Now, Table Service will support restaurants’ dine-in services, further increasing the range of choice available to customers and increasing orders and revenue for restaurants. This is another step towards Deliveroo becoming the definitive food company.

Will Shu, CEO, Deliveroo said: “Hundreds of our restaurant partners stayed open during the lockdown to deliver to local communities around the country. It is now time for the government, consumers, and for Deliveroo to deliver for our restaurants, helping them to survive on the high-street as they reopen for dine-in customers. Deliveroo wants to play a significant role in helping restaurants adopt tech-led solutions to reopen safely, especially smaller partners who otherwise would be unable to develop the technology and face huge financial burdens due to COVID-19.”

Nash Basel, owner of Dublin restaurant Jerusalem, said: “Jerusalem supports Deliveroo’s latest technology innovation which allows dine in customers to order, pay and be served safely. This new service is important for all restaurants, especially during a time when the safety of customers and team members could not be of more importance.”

Responding to the needs of restaurants at this challenging time, Deliveroo has:

  • Published an open letter to the Government and policy paper setting out six recommendations to support the restaurant sector, backed by 57 restaurant partners
  • Introduced a new rapid payment service for restaurants which allows them to access money made from deliveries within a day
  • Created online marketing tools for restaurants to notify customers that they are available for delivery services
  • Developed a new ‘contact-free delivery’ feature in the app so that customers can be confident that deliveries from restaurants are conducted safely
  • Established teams of people across the business to support restaurants who want to be able to deliver food
  • Provided best practice guidelines for converting existing restaurants into delivery-only operations
  • Shared expert advice and guidance on how to operate safely during the outbreak
  • Created a high-profile campaign – #HereToDeliver – to support independent restaurants.
