A relatively new addition to the Irish coffee market, cold brew differs from iced coffee made from hot espresso in both production and taste and can be enjoyed black or with milk.
Bewley’s spent 18 months on research to source the best cold brew producer to bring to the Irish market.
The iconic brand will offer a first taste of the chilled beverage at a price of just 60c a cup in its Grafton Street venue on May 28, from 2pm-5pm.
The temporary price reflects the fact that cold brew is 60 per cent less bitter compared to chilled espresso typically used in iced coffees or lattes.
A 12-hour process is involved in the production process of a batch of the cold brew.
The coffee grounds are slowly steeped in cool water, gently extracting flavours from the bean for less acidity, rich flavour and a smoother taste.
The ground coffee beans never come into contact with heated water, which results in a chemical profile and flavour unique from conventional brewing methods.
Made from 100 per cent coffee, this Colombian Fairtrade cold brew is entirely free from additives.
“Very few places are doing cold brew right in Ireland, certainly not at this scale,” said Sheila Dowling, Bewley’s Commercial Director.
“The launch is to encourage consumers to take their first sip of our cold brew, which we predict will become a new year-round staple for coffee lovers.
“Because it is all very similar language, people think they have already been drinking cold brew where it may have been hot espresso over ice.
“It isn’t that the hot espresso option is bad, but it is like comparing pink lady and granny smith apples – they’re very different.”
The commercial director highlighted an added benefit of the new cold brew – the removal of human error.
“With hot coffee, a lot depends on the skill of the barista making your cup – if the grinder is not set right, you don’t always get the perfect espresso.
“This cold brew is single origin, balanced and has already been formulated to the perfect way of serving, so that it just has to be served to the correct measure.
“It can be enjoyed black or as a premium iced latte with your preferred choice of milk.”
A serving of the Bewley’s Fair Trade Cold Brew will be priced between €4.50-€5.50, dependent on optional extras, such as milk choices and syrups.
